"Things got sour when I started getting bad press about my husband (golfer Jyoti Randhawa) spoiling things for my career. The attack became too personal. It made me angry. I felt betrayed," Chitrangada, who returns with Onir's "Sorry Bhai", told IANS.

"I didn't want to give any importance to the malicious people by trying to explain myself or how things were between my husband and I. Maybe I took things too seriously. I decided to just quit," added the actress, who feels this is the right time to come back.

"I think there's far more free flow of ideas and creativity. So many exciting filmmakers! I think Sriram Raghavan is amazing. I'd have loved to do his 'Johnny Gaddar'. What a lovely time to be in Hindi movies," she said.

She will also be seen in Sudhir Mishra's version of "Devdas", as Chandramukhi.

"My Chandramukhi won't be a nautch girl. She'll be a political socialite, a sensuous wheeler-dealer. She has to have her own charm and aura."

Excerpts from an interview:

Q: Why did you disappear?

A: It all started with a disagreement with some prominent people in the industry. Things got sour when I started getting bad press about my husband (golfer Jyoti Randhawa) spoiling things for my career. The attack became too personal. Not being from the film industry, my husband's family couldn't understand what was being said, and why. It made me angry. I felt betrayed.

I didn't want to give any importance to the malicious people by trying to explain myself or how things were between my husband and I. Maybe I took things too seriously. I decided to just quit.

It took me about two-and-half years to realise I was giving too much importance to my opponents by staying away from what I enjoyed doing.

Q: Wasn't it selfish to leave so many expectations, including those of Mishra, in the lurch?

A: Aren't we all selfish? I wanted to protect my family from those within the industry who were attacking them. I should've spoken up. I kept quiet because I didn't want to get into a boxing bout. In the two-year sabbatical I travelled, read books and became a richer person. I saw many countries in the past two years. I had a lot of time to think about what I wanted to do with my life.

Q: Do you think you lost crucial time?

A: I don't know... I'd rather focus on getting it right now. Who is to say if I'd have got another character like Geeta in "Hazaaron Khwaishen Aisi"? I'm very happy to have got a second chance.

Q: Did you feel a little rusty around the edges when you faced the camera again?

A: No! It was amazing. When I did my first shot with Boman Irani and Sharman Joshi "Sorry Bhai", my hands were cold. But believe me, the minute Onir said 'action' I was totally relaxed. I just loved the whole exercise of assuming a character and borrowing emotions.

It's funny, but when Onir offered me this film I was already thinking of a comeback. It all happened very fast. Now I'd love to be Chandramukhi in Sudhir Mishra's "Devdas".

Q: You won't be playing the typical Chandramukhi?

A: I can't! I don't want to be compared with Vyjanthimala and Madhuri Dixit as Chandramukhi. I'll use my very different personality to create another Chandramukhi. My Chandramukhi won't be a nautch girl. She'll be a political socialite, a sensuous wheeler-dealer. She has to have her own charm and aura.

Q: Do you want to be associated only with avant-garde cinema?

A: I'd like to go wherever my talent and my potential take me. There's no conscious decision to do one particular kind of film. I don't know how to get into the big banners, but I'd love to be in them. They aren't coming to me yet. They're waiting and watching, as they usually do. I'm doing films for my self-actualisation.

Q: Have you picked up golf from your husband?

A: I used to play golf before I met him. We didn't meet because of golf. My father was in the army. So I was very outdoors. I'm pretty good in golf, though not through my husband.

Q: Do you see yourself running around trees?

A: I don't think they do that any more. There are no trees left. But yes, I'd bring my own personality into whatever movies I do.

Q: Do you see the practical problems in conducting a career from Mumbai when your husband's home is in Delhi?

A: It won't be a problem because he spends almost nine months per year travelling. He plays about 30 tournaments. I'm sure we can manage to coordinate our schedules so that we spend time together when he isn't playing. I'll have to do that.

Q: Has the film industry changed since you left?

A: I think there's far more free flow of ideas and creativity. So many exciting filmmakers! I think Sriram Raghavan is amazing. I'd have loved to do his "Johnny Gaddar". What a lovely time to be in Hindi movies!

Q: What wouldn't you be uncomfortable doing?

A: Kissing scenes. And that's nothing to do with being married. As for the leather skirts, it wouldn't depend on their length. I'm a casual jeans-and-shirt Delhi girl. Not too much jewellery and makeup.

Q: Do you think it's difficult for married actresses to return?

A: Isn't that changing? I feel marriage makes you more enriched with experiences and emotions, and therefore a better actress. I just want to grab all my opportunities with both my hands.

Before start reading this report, you should keep in mind that Chandramukhi has already released in Hindi as Bhool Bulaiya with Akshay Kumar in the lead.
I already spoke to Mumbai friends and they have assured that they will give the report soon. Meanwhile our friend Mumbai Chakra said the first day reponse is mind boggling and many theatres including Maratha Mandir was Houseful yesterday. Malayala Manorama has reported that the movie has been released nearly in 100 theatres in many parts of North India including Mumbai.
Our member Balamurugan from Bhuj reports that (earth quake region), the movie has been released 4 shows in Modern theatres here and last night's show was Houseful and the response was thundering. What a major hiccup is they have chopped off Devuda Devuda and Kokku Para para songs. Without Devuda we couldn't imagine watching Chandramukhi. But our friends feel that they must have been chopped the songs to keep the length in minimal.
Reports added that the whole theatre witnessed pin drop silence at the climax hours. Ra ra song was in Hindi. Everybody came out from the theatre saying `Laka Laka.' Particularly Kids. If the impact is this, then do I need to say about its success? Superstar has captured North once again through Chandramukhi Hindi version after Sivaji.
Moreover this is first time a movie dubbed from Tamil to Hindi releasing here. Even Jodha Akbar ran in this theatre for one week only. So even if the Hindi version completed a few days run with average seating ? it would reap a great profits to the Hindi distributor.

Jyothika Sadhana

Jyothika, the cutest, prettiest, most talented and the most innocent faced actress. That’s how her fans and the Tamil Cinema Industry describe Jyothika. Yes, Jyothika is an immensely gifted actress who is bubbly and lovable. Jyothika was first introduced in a Hindi movie titled ‘Doli Saje Ke Rakhna’.Jyothika entered the Tamil Cinema Industry through S.J.Suryah’s film ‘Valee’ where she appeared in a small but a cute role.

Jyothika’s first movie as a heroine was “Poovellam Kettupaar” in which she acted along Surya. Then, Jyothika received the Best Newcomer for the film “Valee”. Jyothika was considered a big heroine as she was giving a lot of big time hit movies continuously for example ‘Kushi’, ‘Mugavari’, ‘Thenali’, ‘Sneghithiye’, ‘Uyirile Kalanthathu’, ‘Rhythm’ and many more.

Jyothika is one of the heroines who perform well. She was much appreciated for her performance, especially in ‘Kushi’ where she played as an expressive, childish and an active girl. Jyothika captured many hearts and she was loved by everyone. Her plus points were her cute and bubbly expressions.

The year 2003 turned out to be Jyothika’s golden year after having only two average movies in the year 2001 and 2002.

Her first movie with Vikram, ‘Dhool’ became a bog commercial hit. Then she had “Kakka Kakka” with Surya which was her 3rd movie with him. “Kakka Kakka” was a big time hit too and received a terrific response from the audience. As her Deepavali release Jyothika had ‘Thirumalai’ with her ‘Kushi’ partner Vijay. ‘Thirumalai’ was officially the clear winner among the other Deepavali releases on that year.

Without any doubt, Jyothika was back to the Number One spot. She was considered as the “Super Star” heroine.

Even though we have new heroines such as Trisha, Sadha, Sonia and so on, Jyothika remains as the best that cannot be replaced.

Now (2004), Jyothika’s latest release was ‘Arul’ with Vikram and “Perazhagan” with Surya. ‘Arul’ was this year’s much awaited movie, but it was considered as a normal hit as it didn’t turn out as it was expected. “Perazhagan” created much anticipation too as both Jyothika and Surya did dual roles for the first time. “Perazhagan” is a Super Hit movie and received a lot of rave reviews. Jyothika and Surya had a bigger scope to show their talent and they succeeded in it.Her latest release Mayavi is doing average bussiness.

Thanks to the efforts of topline producer K.C.N Gowda that the coloured version of "Sathya Harischandra” is being released. He has spent Rs.30 million on colourising of the film.

Released in 1965, the film ran for more than 100 days in several theatres across Karnataka. Multi-faceted Hunusur Krishnamurthy directed the film and its songs are popular even today.

This is for the first time in the history of south Indian cinema that a nearly four-decade-old black and white film is being released in colour.

While Raj Kumar played the role of Raja Harishchandra, Udaya Kumar had donned the role of Vishwamithra and then leading actress Phandari Bai featured as Chandramukhi. All the three veterans are no longer alive.

Well-known actor and producer Dwarakish, who played a comedian's role in the film, says it was \Krishnamurthy's literary talents and superb performances by Raj Kumar and Udaya Kumar that greatly helped the film to become a blockbuster.

"All the artists and technicians had benefited from this film. As I know the theatres all around Karnataka would have released the film one time or the other," said Dwarakish.

Legendary filmmaker K. Asif's "Mughal-e-Azam", a Hindi classic, was the first Indian black and white film to be colourised and released.

Health Minister Anbumani Ramadoss was on Sunday all praise for Tamil superstar Rajnikanth for not smoking on screen in his last two films and hoped Bollywood biggies would follow the South Indian actor.

Ramadoss, facing an all-round attack from the film fraternity after he made an appeal to movie stars to avoid smoking and drinking on screen, said "When Rajnikanth can do movies without smoking, why can't anybody else follow?" Rajnikanth's latest movies -- "Sivaji -- The Boss" and "Chandramukhi" -- did not have any smoking scene, Ramadoss noted and said these were the biggest blockbusters in recent times.

The Tamil superstar quit smoking on screen after Ramadoss made an appeal to him to give up cigarette smoking mannerism on screen.

"There were no smoking scenes in Rajnikanth's last two movies and they were biggest grossers in the history of Indian films," Ramadoss told a private news channel.

Ramadoss came under the radar of Bollywood stars Amitabh Bachchan and Shah Rukh Khan after he appealed to them to stop smoking in movies.

Both the stars hit back at the minister saying they don't want his advice.

Rajnikanth and the minister's father and PMK founder S Ramadoss had crossed swords during the release of the actor's "Baba" in 2002.

The PMK founder had accused Rajnikanth, who has a huge fan following across South India, of "spoiling" the younger generation who emulate his "smoking styles" on screen and the actor had even directly campaigned against the party during the 2004 Lok Sabha elections.
